Flightfox from a buyers perspective - Part 1

A few months ago I posted about making money on Flightfox, a service which allows you to post a flight and let others do the work of finding the best price, connections, using your miles etc. After that post I bid on a few more flights for the next week or two, but ended up giving up on it. The competition became fierce and I basically wasn't winning enough to warrant the time.

So I figure if I couldn't beat them back then, I probably can't now. It took me about an hour Sunday night to find a 1 way flight from Prague to Austin for $650, and this morning I posted the details on Flightfox to see what they come up with. You can watch the Prague to Austin contest - feel free to post a flight and try to earn some money if you know a cheaper connection!

If it works out in my favor I have a few more upcoming flights that I'll be posting as well. Looking at the number of active flights at the moment though, it seems that the buzz has died down a bit and the service isn't as busy as it used to be. Currently there are about 2 pages of open flights, a few months ago there were 5 or 6 pages. I hope this doesn't mean the service is dying off - I like the premise, and hope it succeeds.

Once the contest is over I'll be posting the results under Flightfox from a buyers perspective - Part 2

A Day in Flight - Visualization

Here's a nice video showing all the flights operating over the US in a single day. Don't forget to pay attention to the clock in the bottom right, and the total count of planes in the bottom left.

A very rough plan

I don't yet, and possibly never will, have a detailed plan for the coming months. What I have so far is a plan to visit Texas then fly to either southern Mexico or Guatemala.......and go south.

The first few months, half year, or however long it takes will be in Central America looking for that perfect beach and the rum to go with it. Last year I developed a taste for Flor de Cana, perhaps this year I'll find another one that's just as good.

Recently the Prague Princess has been emphasizing how laid back she will be on this trip, lacking a schedule will hopefully agree with her. I'm looking forward to the first time a bus driver drops us off at some random crossroad in the mountains, perhaps with a few locals who speak as little Spanish as we do and no one knowing when the connecting bus might show up. I have a feeling there will be a bit of a freak out as I lay down in the sun, waiting for the inevitable bus to show up.

The bus always shows up. I hope the bus always shows up.

Ain't it pretty - new design for the site

After a couple of months the previous look of the site was starting to irritate me. I'm not sure if the new one is any better, and it's more of a pain to update - but for the moment I like it more.

It's also forcing me to learn a little java script, so there is some benefit other than not being painful on the eyes.

I've found two issues so far that need some work -

Issue 1 - the two RSS links in the sidebar behave different. One brings up the nice menu with the different reader options, but looks like crap. The other looks better but just pushes you to the feed page, but the button looks better. It probably won't be too difficult to manipulate the nicer looking one to act like the better behaved one.
Issue C - the Reply link for the comments doesn't work. I have no idea what fixing this will entail, it's java script doing something.

So please bear with me and report any other issues you see. Since I took a total of one lesson of one online java script course this will be a slow fix.

Why would you wait 50 years?

During a recent episode of Greys Anatomy, an old couple was in the hospital (where else) because the man had had a heart attack before they left for a cruise to Alaska. Everything was typical for an episode of Greys Anatomy until the man mentioned to the woman that she had been waiting 50 years to take this trip to Alaska.

My question is why would you wait 50 years to take what you consider the trip of your lifetime? Why would you wait to do something so simple as take a trip anywhere? The world we live on is getting smaller everyday, it has never been cheaper to travel anywhere, much less to somewhere as close to Seattle as Alaska.

What are you doing during the rest of your life that is so important that you cannot take a few weeks or months and go see the things you want to see?

Semana Santa

Oddity Central has a gallery of beautiful pictures of the sand carpets of Semana Santa in Antigua.

I was in Antigua last year for Semana Santa - and you really have to see these street decorations to believe them. It was amazing that they would put so much work into them, finishing just minutes before the parades pass by destroying them.
